The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE)

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a highly competitive national-level exam conducted in India for admission to postgraduate engineering programs (M.Tech, MS) and research programs (Ph.D.) at Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore, and other institutions.

Eligibility:

  • Candidates must possess a Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, or any other equivalent qualification recognized by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).
  • Candidates in the final year of their qualifying examination are also eligible to appear for GATE.

Exam format:

  • The exam is conducted as a Computer Based Test (CBT).
  • There are a total of 30 test papers comprising full papers and sectional papers.
  • Candidates have the option to appear for one or two test papers from the allowed two-paper combinations.
  • The duration of the exam is 3 hours.
  • The question paper consists of Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) and Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions.

  • Direct Ph.D. Admissions: Many universities and institutes consider GATE scores for direct Ph.D. admissions in Engineering and related disciplines.

 

Recruitment:

  • Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs): Several PSUs like Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), and NTPC use GATE scores for recruitment to entry-level engineering positions.
