Established in 1969 as 'Burdwan University Medical College,' the institution had humble beginnings in a hollow brick building and was initiated by the then Health Minister, Late Nani Bhattacharyaa. In 1976, the government of West Bengal took over, renaming it Burdwan Medical College. Initially facing infrastructure challenges, the first batch of 50 students in 1969 had to relocate to Kolkata for their MBBS due to limitations. However, subsequent batches, starting in 1970, completed their degrees at Burdwan.Despite the initial struggles and eight years for the first batch to graduate in 1978, many alumni became prominent clinicians and academicians. Political unrest and student protests in the early years led to the government takeover in 1976. Since then, Burdwan Medical College steadily grew into an academic hub, and by 2000, the annual MBBS intake increased to 100 students. Since 2013, it's approved for 150 MBBS students annually, and the institution is now a knowledge center for around 100 postgraduates, including super-specialties per batch.
